Lufthansa question
 

Overall, would people consider Lufthansa a decent airline? What has your experience been as far as delays, lost luggage etc? Any better or worse than any other airline? They have the best schedule for a trip I'm doing to Italy, so I was curious as to what people had experienced with them. We will be flying in Economy so if anyone has flown Economy can comment that would be ideal. Also, how are both Frankfurt and Munich as far as airports to connect in? (do you need to allow lots of extra time, easy/hard to navigate etc). thanks!

I've flown DLH several times across the Atlantic and found the airline and service to be nothing exceptional but just plain OK.

We've flown LH transatlantic a few times and intra-Europe quite a few times. Overall, I'd consider it a decent airline. I've always found the service to be fine and very efficient. Usually on time, but delays do happen. Never a problem with checked luggage; they can be strict about weight of carryons. I've only flown on the A340 transatlantic and I'd rate comfort about the same as others; but I have heard that the 747s feel pretty packed in economy. I don't think many of LH's planes have seat-back screens.

I'd pick a connection at Munich or Frankfurt over CDG or LHR any day - especially Munich. It is a large terminal, but very modern and well marked. You will go through immigration if connecting to Italy from the US, but I've never encountered long lines there. Frankfurt is not bad, although the airport layout is a bit more convoluted.

Only plane in LH's fleet that has individual screens in coach is the A340-600 (346).

You'll need at least an hour to make the connection at FRA.

We flew Lufthansa from San Francisco direct to Frankfurt (12 hours!!) The economy seats were slightly narrower and not as cushiony as domestic airlines, but this was about 8 years ago so they may have changed them by now.

However, I was quite pleased with the service. The flight attendents were very sweet. Also, we had some confusion at the Frankfurt airport on our return flight regarding the tax rebate on certain purchases, and had to retrieve our luggage. They were very accomodating, sent us down to the luggage holding area and allowed us to retrieve our bags. (This was well before 9/11) Considering how huge the airport is, we were impressed at their attention to our problem.

By the way, Frankfurt airport is huge--so allow lots of extra time. Also, be prepared with some kind of plan in case you get separated from your traveling partner inside the Frankfurt terminal. I was with my husband and we were transferring from the airline to the train platform and were lost. I stopped for a few seconds to look at an English translator box and turned around and my husband had disappeared. I almost lost it. There were about 12 exits and I didn't know which one he took, and I didn't want to go too far in case he came back looking for me. Turns out he had found the train platform and assumed I would eventually find it and was waiting for me. I had looked down the stairs and saw what looked like our suitcase and luckily I found him in time. We never had a plan in case we got separated. Boy, did he get an earful from me.

Lufthansa is ok, it's not the cheapest airline, but alright... I flew with worse airlines..
haven't lost my luggage yet with any kind of airline - thank God!

Munich and Frankfurt are big airports....

Flew Lufthansa last month in economy. It was fine. They did offer a lot of water and fruit juice on the flight. I`d rate them above american carriers.

Munich is a much more compact airport than FRA. Would always if possible change flights in Munich rather than FRA.
