Lufthansa luggage limitations

I just flew Luft and realised my ticket is supposedly a cheap one that doesn't allow luggage other than a carry on.
I don't mind but check - I didn't expect something like that from Luft.

Why?

We accidentally bought a ticket like that on United recently. Not big deal for us, either, but it's a new wrinkle, for sure.

Nothing new here - lots of airlines offer "low priced" seats where you have to pay extra to check luggage. That policy has been around for a while.

I hadn't seen such a fare from a non-budget airline before. I think that part is new, but I could be wrong.

That was the reason for my post. I am used to this with Ryanair and the likes of easyJet not with star alliance.

I just assumed. And as often the case assuming is wrong.

The first time I experienced "no free baggage allowance" on the Lufthansa Group was in March 2014, with Swiss. I managed to buy tickets to Geneva without realising that the fare didn't allow checked baggage. When I realised my mistake (a friend warned me) I called to book one bag but it couldn't be done, so I had to upgrade. I think you can book extra baggage now, so I guess those were the early days.
