Lufthansa - how can I find out what the fuel surcharge will be?

I am escorting a group of 49 students in March to Cairo, departing Detroit, flying Lufthansa. How can I determine the fuel surcharge? Can it change prior to departure?

Fares and surcharges don't change once the tickets are issued.

But if you're negotiating with LH for group fares and not actually ticketing them at this point, you just have to ask LH's group sales agent what it is now and whether it'll change.

Some airlines show their base fare for a selection and then when you get further into the online booking, before you actually make a payment you will be presented with the total cost of base plus taxes and surcharges etc.

As rkkwan indicates, if you've already booked I likewise would not expect that a reduction would be offered on any changes - no harm in asking though.

If you're still negotiating, then for sure see if you can have factored in fuel price reductions, and perhaps provision for dropping in any further decreases but then that could work both ways and you would likely have to wear any up moves.

Thanks rkkwan and Bushranger. I have contacted our travel professional to ask some pointed questions. I will look forward to her response.

We've just been ticketed and the fuel surcharge has been fixed at $35 per ticket. I'm not sure if this is $35 more than our original quote from the TA or $35 in total. Oh well, off we go.
