I'm just gathering opinions here. On a flight from BOS-MUC, seated in coach, will I be permitted to have a small shoulder bag in addition to a carry-on? The shoulder bag is pretty small, just to carry camera stuff and documents, and easily would fit under a seat. In fact, 3 of them would fit under a seat.

Also, how likely is it that the checked baggage is actually weighed??

My opinion: go to Lufthansa dot com and read their luggage rules. They are Germans, so the rules will be followed. I would think that there is a 100% chance that the luggage would get weighed.

If it's really small like a purse I don't think you should have a problem. Otherwise, they're pretty strict. Also, my experience is that they will definitely weigh baggage - both checked and carry on. They did this to us last year and we're taking LH again in two weeks and I expect them to do it again. As already suggested, double check current info on their web site as it's pretty thorough.

Economy Class passengers are only permitted one piece of hand luggage.

In addition to your hand luggage, you may take the following items on board:
a handbag, wrist bag or small bag with shoulder straps
a coat, shawl or blanket
an umbrella or walking stick
a small camera or a pair of binoculars
an appropriate amount of reading material for the journey
a baby basket and baby food for consumption during the flight
crutches or other orthopaedic aids needed during the journey

Hmm....I guess the issue is the definition of "small". Well, the darned thing isn't very big, thus if I couldn't bring it the world won't end. It would be fairly convenient not to have to go fishing in my carry-on for reading material and camera and documents etc.

I just returned from a two week trip to Europe, flying both ways on Lufthansa. I had no problem taking both a rolling carry-on and a medium size shoulder bag on board.

Don't know if this helps, but our daughter's high school orchestra is going on a concert tour of Europe this summer and taking LH both ways. We were just informed that in addition to the "regular" carry-on bag, small instruments (eg, flutes, clarinets) could also be brought as carry-ons. So if your camera bag is roughly same size as clarinet case, you should be OK.

I agree that checkin bags will likely bed checked - every checkin counter I've seen has a scale. Whether they care or not about exact weight I cannot say.

Regardging carry on bags. You will be allowed a personal item (laptop bag, purse, etc) in addition to your carryon.

At boarding recently at JFK, they made several announcements that any carryon over 8kg (20lbs) should be brought to the desk for checkin. Some people with obviously large/heavy carryons did so, but many did not. One person who came forward had their bag lifted and weighed by hand by the FA. and was told it was fine.

At boarding time, they had out one of the luggage sizing racks and ask a few people with larger bags to check them, but no bags were weighed.

Bottom line. I thingk you will be ok with a small bag and a reasonable sized carryon. They might flag a 21 or 22" roller bag and ask you to check it. If you have what considered a large carryon, esp. if it weighs more thatn 20lb, I recommend you have a smaller bag inside that one that you can quickly take out with any items you consider "must have" carryon, and be prepared to have the carry checked through to your destination.
