Well, the obvious one is to have carry-on luggage only. I travel a great deal, so I've learned how to pack. I could be very comfortable with a carry-on for a trip up to about 10 days. If there are 2 of you traveling together, you could almost have 3 carry-ons if you don't carry a lot of electronics or presents.
If you can't do without a check-in luggage, make sure it has your name and address in many different places. Have a good strong permanent leather name tag attached, plus take 1 or even 2 airline tags, filled out and put them on the outside of the luggage. Make a list of the luggage content and put a xeroxed copy inside the luggage with another sheet of paper with your name address and phone # and even the flight # you will be on.
The xerox is to "possibly" stop an airline employee from stealing from your suitcase. I do say "possibly", but regardless it can't hurt.
Make sure you don't pack any valuables. That includes jewelry, electronics or anything that could be sold to your local pawn shop.
This should help about 90% of the time, but as the airlines move millions of pieces of luggage daily, there will always be a possibility of lost luggage.
Good Luck!
