Lost in Venice
This will be my first time to Venice. My wife and I will be flying into Marco Polo arriving at about 6:30 p.m. where we will be seeking transfer to a cruise ship. We will have 3 suitcases. I have gotten mixed responses from previous visitors stating that it's as close as 10 miles to as far as 40 miles. I prefer not making the trip by water taxi. Can you please help me with both public and private transportation and the approximate cost. Thank you

I know there is taxi, bus, and train service, but not knowing exactly where your ship will be docked, I would suggest you contact the cruise line; certainly they have dealt with this.

Thank you for your reply. I have spoken with the cruise line (Celebrity)and they advised that their last shuttle is at 3:30. If we arrive after 3:30, we have to make our own way?? Sooo

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the name of the terminal where our ship will be docked. Venezia Terminal Passeggeri #7.
Ihope this enables you to help me with my question. Thanks Baesue |
Venice has two train stations: one on the mainland at Mestre, I believe, and the one on the island (S. Lucia), which is fairly close to where the cruise ships dock. I know there is a shuttle bus from Marco Polo to the train station at Mestre, which takes, I think, less than half an hour, and the train would take less than that to the island, but you would have a lot of connections in doing this, and you would still have to find a way from the train station to the cruise ship dock, so if time is of the essence, I think a land taxi would be your best bet. An advantage of the taxi is that the driver should know just where your particular dock is. There is also a boat, the Alilaguna line, but it is far slower than a water taxi, and I am not sure how close it gets to the cruise ship docks. The Alilaguna line took us about an hour from Zatarre, on the Guidica canal (the cruise ship facilities are on the far end of the Guidica canal) to the airport.
Good luck in your travels. We haven't yet taken a cruise ship, but one of these years... Also, I think there is travel talk forum for cruising; perhaps you could find an authoratative answer there. http://www.actv.it/ or http://www.alilaguna.it/ might have information for you. |
Thanks for your help. Perhaps when you take your first cruise, I will be able to help you.
