Layover in JFK, what to do in the city?

Hello everyone,

I have a trip in August that involves a layover in JFK. We (me, husband) in JFK at 9:00 PM and we have 8 hours.
We're thinking of going to the city and spend a few hours there but not sure what to do. Any recommendations for a 29 year old couple who has never been in NYC?

Thanks

Do I understand correctly that you arrive at JFK at 9PM to begin an 8 hour layover. If that's the case you are going to be pretty limited on what you can do other than to have a meal at an all night restaurant or go to a night club for drinks and music since most "tourist attractions will be closed".

If, on the other hand, you mean you arrive in JFK around 1PM and have a flight out 8 hours later at 9PM then that opens up more possibilities. If you actually ment you arrive JFK at 9AM and leave at 5PM that's even better since you can do almst anything.

So, please clarify your arrival/departure time and give us some idea of the kinds of things that interest you. It will make it easier to give you relevant suggestions.

Thanks RoamsAround, I actually do arrive at 9 pm (unfortunately) and thought I would go roam around the city, have dinner, a drink or a club, just so that my husband and I don't get stuck at the airport for 8 hours. Any advise as to what to do, where to go, how to get around???

If it were me, I'd probably just get a room and try to get some sleep. You could walk around midtown, Times Square and maybe go up to the Empire State building. Greenwich Village is another option, as are the clubs.

The Empire State Building is a great suggestion, as it's open until 1 or 2 AM for viewing. I'd look for good reviews for a restaurant open late, and like others mentioned, consider going to some clubs.

I fully understand why you'd want to go into the city, and I'm always willing to stay up late, but unless you have some way of getting some sleep beforehand, it would be hard to stay out all night, I would think.
