LAX Domestic to Int'l Connx

Hello, I will be traveling thru LAX as a domestic traveler arriving at Terminal 4 (American) then I need to connect to Terminal 2 (Air Canada). I will be traveling with a toddler (umbrella stroller), one carry on, 2 checked bags. I understand I need to catch a shuttle from the lower level of Terminal 4 to get to Terminal 2 and presumably re:clear security. My question that I'm having a hard time finding an answer to is: Do I have to collect my checked bags Terminal 4 before connecting to Terminal 2? I will clear customs in Vancouver upon my layover there I believe. Any information

Call AA and ask if they have a baggage handling agreement with Air Canada. If so, you should be able to check your luggage through to your Canadian destination when you check-in for your AA flight. If not, you'll have to claim your luggage upon arrival at LAX and re-check it with Air Canada.

Yes, regardless of whether your luggage will be checked through to your final destination or not you WILL exit the secure area in Terminal 2 and have to re-clear TSA in Terminal 4.

Coming from the US you'll clear customs at your first entry point in Canada (I'm guessing that's Vancouver, although it's not perfectly clear from the info in your post).

Air Canada and AA have an interline agreement, so you should be able to check your bags all the way through. You will still need to get yourself, your toddler, and your carry-on from Terminal 4 to 2, and you will have to clear security again.

I'm confused about your flights. Are you saying you are flying from Vancouver to LAX and then Back to Canada? That strikes me as an odd route. If you are flying from LAX to Vancouver, then you go through both immigration and customs in Vancouver (they are two separate things).

If I understand you right, you fly into LAX from another US airport, then you transfer to Air Canada to fly first to Vancouver and then on to some other Canadian destination?

As stated above, only AA can tell you for sure if your bags can go through so that you don't need to touch them in L.A.

From Terminal 4 to Terminal 2 it's not too far a haul. Without luggage it's an easy walk.

The LAX layout is a horseshoe, with the (not numbered) international terminal at the top. Look at the map at http://www.lawa.org/uploadedFiles/LA...tion%20Map.pdf

Since you will have left the secure area of T4, you'll show your boarding pass and go through security at T2. As long as you allow the time, there is nothing else to worry about. I'm not sure if the shuttle will be quicker, I would just walk, shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

If I may add this: The "International" Tom Bradley terminal I mentioned is not the only terminal where international flights arrive or depart. Air Canada for example indeed uses T2.
