KLM Upper or Lower Deck
Flying from L.A. to Amsterdam in business class. Anyone have any experience flying in the upper deck vs. lower deck of the 747-400? Also, what is the business lounge like at LAX? (Terminal 2)

Hope it is not too late to change your airline, KLM are recognised for having the worst business class of any European airline, but if it is too late Upper Deck is the best of a bad lot. The catering is particularly bad so eat before you go.

I am not a great KLM-fan, but David is wrong. KLM Intercontinental business class is quite good, and better than business class on Lufthansa and Air France, for example.
I prefer to be downstairs (lower deck) on KLM's 747's business class, because downstairs "feels" roomier. (large empty space in the center of the cabin) However, some of my colleagues prefer upstairs, (which has nice luggage bins under the windows), so it depends on your preferences.

We flew last year from EWR to AMS on KLM business. Don't remember the plane, but it and the service was fine.

We just flew Northwest from DTW to NRT business on 747-400. The upper deck was very good, roomy. As mentioned, side luggage bins were helpful. We felt that seats behind the mid-exit was better. Don't know about downstairs.

"Seats behind the mid-exit WERE better".

Just returned from our trip, and I appreciate all the comments. We tried the upper deck and found it terrific. Huge amount of leg room -- seats recline close to 180 and the guy at the window seat could still get out without disturbing me. There's about 20 or so seats on the upper deck, two toilets, and 2 flight attendents. The food was good and service pleasant. I did walk downstairs and check out economy (where we ususally sit), which looked very tight. I also checked out lower deck business class, which was like the upstairs version, but less serene imo.
