KLM Charging for Meals on Transatlantic flights??

Can this be true? I just received an e-mail from KLM:

<We're now offering à la carte meals in economy class on KLM operated flights departing Amsterdam to our US gateways (except to San Francisco).

Customers will have the choice of four à la carte options, from $16 per meal:

• Bella Italia
• Vegetarian
• Indonesian rice dish
• Healthy Japanese

You can place your order either during the online booking process or between 90 days and 48 hours prior to departure via 'Manage my Booking'.

Smakelijk eten - Enjoy your meal!>

Does this mean that if you don't pony up the "from $16," you do not eat on a flight from JFK to AMS, for example? Are they kidding? Or is this old news?

I got this email this morning too but my home airport is SFO. I read on flyertalk that this is an optional upgrade. Here's the KLM page link:

KLM's website clearly explains it. In coach there is a choice of 2 meals. But if you want one of the "special' menu choices, you need to pre-order and pay.

Wow! This would be shocking! Last year we got the cheapest seats possible, and free booze on the plane

This is indeed "old news", in that KLM has been offering the à la carte meals for at least a year on at least some of their routes (they were doing it when I flew them AMS-CPT-AMS last October). Their regular meals were just fine, to me anyway.
