JFK questions
Hi
My daughter will be flying into JFK from MSP. After spending some days in NYC she will fly from JFK to AMS. DD is traveling with two large duffel bags and a carry on so will probably need to grab a luggage cart and hire whatever ride is most convenient to get herself to the city. I've read the Plan Ahead- and Construction Travel Advisory notices on the JFK website and they strongly suggest to use public transport. Anyone been to JFK recently to know how doable the taxis or Ubers are for arrivals and departures considering the advisories? DD is also flying Delta. Do all flights both domestic and int'l use terminal 4? For departure, the advisory also suggests to get an early start considering the situation. With all this in mind just wondering approx. how much extra time she should allow herself? Any info would be appreciated. TIA! |
I hope it's OK to tag along. I will be arriving into JFK and we were planning to take an uber to midtown. If there are better options I would love to hear about them.

If someone has more than minimal luggage, getting to Manhattan from JFK is best done by cab or car service.

Thank you for the reply.

AJ, are you recommending a cab instead of uber?

P_M,
I posted my question on a different forum and a person replied saying to take its best to take a cab. They said that uber pick up points are a pain and now with the construction even more so. They also said that a cab could offer a better flat rate than Ubers pricing but since Uber fluctuates that may or may not be true. Hope that helps! |
It does help, thanks.

I've been using Carmel lately an are happy with them. Or just take a yellow cab.

Thanks for all your replies. A follow up. DD is back in Europe after her JFK flight this week. She ended up taking a Lyft to the airport from the city. Was a little unclear but she said her telephone number didn’t go through when trying to book an Uber and yellow cab. Anyway, the transfer went smoothly and the driver was able to drop her at the departure terminal 4. At drop off there were plenty of luggage carts on hand for her large duffel bags etc.

Thanks for the update, I'm glad it went well.

I disagree that a car is the best means for traveling from JFK to Manhattan. The AirTrain to Jamaica Station to the either Penn Station or Grand Central is easy and far less expensive. When I returned from Italy last month it took 45 minutes from my gate to Penn Station and it was far less expensive than an Uber or cab.

I couldn’t see how to edit my comment above (#11), but obviously if your daughter is traveling with multiple bags, the train might not be for her. I generally travel with only a backpack and rolling carry on bag which makes public transit my best choice for getting to and from the airport.
