JFK-Newark
 

Due to Continental's overnight rate hike (grumble) my original, simple itinerary for going from Houston to Rome has increased $700. Now, the lowest I can get is Houston to JFK, then connecting in Newark to get to Rome. If the IAH-JFK flight gets in at 330 pm, could I easily make it to Newark by 820 to make the 1020 Rome flight? I looked at the JFK website and it looks like I have bus or taxi options, but I'm still worried about making it on time, safely. I have never been to either JFK or Newark, so take that into consideration. Please help with your knowledge! Thank you!!!

You should have plenty of time to get to Newark from JFK. I would allow about 1.5 hr. of travel time between the two airports depending on the traffic. Assuming you are taking the bus, getting to the Port Aurthority Bus terminal for the transfer to the Newark bound bus will probably take about 45 minutes. Of course it will depend on what day of the week your are flying in. If it's a weekday it will take a bit longer. in any case, I think you should be okay.

I've never done this - I'm a taxi person myself, but -

-from JFK, take the AirTran to the Jamaica Station (Long Island Rail Road);
-take LIRR to Manhattan (Pennsylvania Station - last stop)
-at Penn Station transfer to the AirTran to Newark Airport.

The only thing I'm not sure about - luggage - how much you have, how large, and storage on these conveyences.

Why not do a search for the NY/NJ Port Authority - where, I believe, this information should be available - how, how often, how much, etc.

If anyone out there has more specifics on this - do tell. Hope this helps.

I've been following some Continental prices and there was a jump on some flights yesterday (Saturday), but this morning the prices were back to normal. Try checking again, unless your flight is in the near future (say a month), where it is common that fares soar.

If you take the Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica Sation, I would recommend taking the E train subway to Penn Station instead. Alternativesly you could take the Airtrain from JFK to Howard Beach and conect with the A train to Penn Station. The Airtrain/E or A train option is $7.00 one way versus the Airtain/Long Island Rairoad $16.00 each way. The time difference does not justify the higher price IMHO.

Clevelandbrown - I did check Continental's web site this morning and saw that my fares had gone back to normal...thank goodness. So it looks like I won't have to do the JFK-EWR transfer after all (although, it apparently would have been easy :) ).

Thanks AAFF - I just didn't have the link handy. But it looks like TT_TO will get into EWR afterall if they hurry and buy those tickets.
