I tried to buy an upgrade from IAD to OAK on United and they said it would be the difference in the ticket price. I paid $200 one way and the cost of a first class ticket that day was $1900 so I'd have to shell out $1700 for a one way ticket. No thanks, I'll sit in coach and take Northwest next time. I'm a silver elite on that one....

Norma- check out ual.com. they sell upgrade certificates that can be used on North American flights. 4 500-mile certificates cost $125. They're called e-upgrades. Downside is that if you're not a Premier member you can only use them on full-fare coach, and you won't know if your upgrade has cleared until pretty close to the flight. You can also purchase miles if you need to top off your account.
