Internal US Flights - Please Help
 

Planning our trip for next year and need some help. We need to get from Boston - San Fran and then from San Fran to Vegas. Any advice on what airline to use is appreciated.

Go to Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, .com and price shop and schedule shop. Decide if you like the fare you see now or want to wait for a sale - but price could also go up. Then check the newer airlines on their individual websites (JetBlue, Southwest, etc.) and do the same.

Depending on when next year, you might want to avoid specific airlines with already publicized finanacial problems (I guess that is all of them - but I mean USAirways and Delta especially)

After you buy your ticket, do not keep checking back on prices to see if you could have gotten a ticket cheaper or you will make yourself crazy.

Remember that San Francisco has 3 airports, SFO and Oakland(OAK) are about the same distance from San Francisco city center. San Jose(SJC) is about 40 miles away. All three offer public transportation into San Francisco as well as shuttles/taxis and private limos.

Boston-San Francisco is a long flight(5-6 hours), so taking a non-stop may be preferable.

San-Francisco-Las Vegas(actually OAK-LAS) is served by Southwest.com. They probably will have the best fares.

BOS-OAK is served by JetBlue.
While BOS - SFO is served by Airtran with easy to purchase one-way fares, you have to change planes in ATL, which adds a lot of time.

As mentioned above, OAK - LAS is well served by Southwest Airlines.

You can take jetBlue BOS-OAK and OAK-LAS.
I would shop around but probably fly United nonstops BOS-SFO and SFO-LAS

Are you flying back to Boston or Las Vegas is your final destination? Southwest runs one-way internet promotions all the times not requiring round trip purchase for incredible fares. Southwest flies from Providence, RI and Manchester, NH which are accesible from the Boston area and take you into Oakland. Southwest is an excellent option if you are buying tickets well ahead of your travel dates. They do not have any change or cancellation fees and if for any reason you can not do the trip, the airline will give you full credit to use for one year on any future travel on Southwest.

In August, we flew from Albany, NY to Oakland (San Francisco) and then from LA back to Albany on Southwest $99 each way. Southwest doesn't allow booking on their flights until about 6 months ahead. You have to keep checking their website, because when the flights become available the cheap seats sell out fast. We were very happy with Southwest, except for their "cattle call" method of boarding.

Hann, you would have been wiser to suggest that a person <i>allow for 1.5 hours</i> to travel from the South end of San Jose to SFO airport.
Depending on the point of origin, it <i>IS</i> 40 minutes to SFO from San Jose. I just did this drive today.

And SJC is <i>not</i> &quot;nowhere near San Francisco&quot;. It's all relative.

To get to SF, a person could fly into OAK, SJC, or SFO. Period.

San Francisco only has one airport that I can remember, it's called SFO. OAK is in Oakland and SJC is in San Jose.

Getting from SJC to San Francisco coud take you close to 2 hours with traffic. So if San Jose or Silicon Valley or even Monterey is your final destination then San Jose International Airport is your best bet.

For San Francisco as your destination I'd suggest OAK instead of SFO. Although both are equidistant to San Francisco, OAK is not plaqued with the fog delays that SFO is. Flying into SJC is not really a viable option to get to San Francisco since it's just too far away.
