I booked our roundtrip flights to Glasgow a month or two ago. I've been watching to see if I did good in booking when I did, and now that exact same flight is $1632 higher. I'm extremely glad I booked early, but am wondering if this kind of increase is normal. Usually I let the travel company book our flights and never pay further attention to it. I booked approximately 9 months before we fly. Is that usually a good thing to do? New territory for me. Thanks.

That seems like alot. We booked our tickets to Germany 3 weeks ago. They are up $140 from when we booked. With fuel prices rising I expect that they will go higher. Are they the same class and everything? Non refundable/refundable?

One has to understand how airfare works on most airlines. At any moment, there can be multiple <b>fare class</b> available for purchase. Fare class is determined by one-way vs round trip, connections, return period, restrictions, and many more factors.

The fare of each fare class usually is pretty stable, but the number of seats the airline would sell for each class is always in flux. They may be bought up, or the airline can pull them out, or release them; based on complex algorithm they use to maximize revenue.

A full fare from US to Europe in economy can cost thousands of dollars, often more than a discounted business class fare. So, when you see a big jump in fares, it simply means the cheaper fare class is no longer available, for whatever reason.

Thanks, Guys. Instead of using kayak, as I usually do to check, I went to USAirways. My exact same flight is up $168, not $1632. So when I thought I was comparing exactly the same flight, obviously I wasn't. I learn a lot here. Appreciate it.
