Ideas for stop over from MAUI to BOS

Hello,
We will be departing MAUI at the end of January this year, and be heading, ultimately, to BOS.
We were wondering where a good place to have a stop over would be, to ease the burden of the long flight.
We will have been in San Francisco for one week prior to flying to Hawaii, so we would not be interested in a stop over in that city - nor San Diego, for we feel we would have had enough "beach" by then.
Other suggestions were Las Vegas. Our suitcases will be full of summer clothing, dress down clothing, and for Vegas, I just wouldn't have the proper attire (flip flops and water shoes won't cut it, besides, Vegas is freezing in January)
We thought about Sedona, but saw that it's very cold there as well.
We thought about Los Angelas. We've never been there, but feel it's more of a dressy city, it's kind of intimidating, we just want to relax and chill out somewhere interesting.
Thought of Oregon too, but it's very cold there as well.
One place we've always wanted to experience is Austin Texas.
But what would getting to Austin entail from Maui? Is it possible at all?
If not, are there other stopover destinations that we might consider?
Somewhere where the temps are about the same as they are on Maui about now... 60's, 70's, a place that isn't too dressy, somewhere we could just stroll around, maybe listen to music, tour an interesting city while getting rid of some of the jet lag.
Speaking of jet lag, how long, typically, is the right number of nights to chill out in a stop over place in order to heed off the jet lag?
That's the primary purpose of our stop, that, and not having such a long flight back home.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Los Angeles??? It is close to the most casual city in the world.

San Diego is not at all Hawaii-type 'beachy' and there is a lot to see and do that is not at all beach related.

In Vegas you will see every type of clothing -- and the only 'dressy' places are a few high end restaurants and clubs.

There is no set length of time. Some don't suffer at all, some are over it after a few hours sleep, and some it takes days.

I think the "burden" of a perfunctory stop is greater than just getting myself home. If you aren't feeling compelled to visit a particular place, why go to the trouble of stopping?

Thank you... it's interesting to hear that LA is not dressy!

And that is great that San Diego is not at all beachy, and there's a lot to see and do.

I like that.

Maybe we'll do San Diego. It seems maybe more relaxing than LA, would you say?

MmePerdu - we do feel compelled to visit Austin, especially. We are looking into how easy that would be coming from Maui.

Thanks again!

Just to clarify -- SD is 'beachy' but its not all about the beach - there is the gaslamp quarter, the fabulous Balboa Park, the world famous zoo and the animal park, a great craft beer scene, wonderful shopping, and more.

In L.A. you can do what you want. Period.

If you're the person who always worries about what others think of you (even if they really don't care), then you'll feel funny in your Maui gear. It's only "dressy" if you want to eat in certain upscale restaurants, same as everywhere else - "neat casual" is ok, but maybe downright "Maui beach" isn't quite "neat casual".

So you eat somewhere more laidback - plenty of choices everywhere.

But more than anything, In January you will be chilly - L.A. has some nicely warm days, but not every day, and evenings and early mornings in January are not Maui weather.

nowhere in the mainland US is likely to be 'Maui weather' ;)

Even in 'warm' desert areas where snowbirds flock to -- it will be cold at night.

My goodness, you are making what should be a relaxing vacation into a huge production! If you are trying to " to ease the burden of the long flight" you want to stop in a city you can get to non-stop from Maui. Certainly, LA qualifies, I'm not sure about San Diego - check on it. And your stopovers will make your flights MUCH more expensive. Frankly, the flight from the east coast to/from Hawaii is not that onerous (speaking as someone who goes to Asia regularly), the stopover only makes getting to and from your destination longer. So pause and consider what is important to you. If it was my trip, I'd opt for no stopovers and spend the time in Hawaii which is more "special" than any of the places you are thinking about for s stopover. And none of the places you are considering will be as warm as Hawaii.

Aloha, I would do LA. I typically do OGG to LAX and then DCA. Or HNL to LAX and then DCA. At some points during the year it's a 6hr time change from Hawaii to the east. Other times it's 5 hr time change. I give myself one night in LAX (enough time to relax, sleep and get in-n-out burgers. :) Then when I get home it's one day per one hour time change. I do this flight 4 times a year. I think it's better to recover at home versus another city. Please remember what it's like to come and go from another airport (repacking, rental car, flight check in, TSA, etc). Sometimes it's nice to go straight through and other times it's nice to make a quick one night stop. Pro and Cons with everything. Mahalo :)

I agree, I think I'm over emphasizing the need to "acclimate", and will prob just fly right back home at the conclusion of our Maui stay.
Having trouble finding flights out of Maui that don't depart super early.
It seems to be a busy day for flights the day we leave Maui for some reason.. (Jan 27)
We need to get to Hartford instead of Boston.
The snowstorm two weeks ago canceled our Boston to Oahu flight so we scrambled and found a flight out of Hartford to Oahu instead.

Boston is your final destination? I would not stopover, as the others have said. The trip is over, I'd just get home. Many of the flights out of Hawaii are overnight. We go to the Big Island almost every year with our young kids from Boston and always take a redeye stopping briefly through LA or SF. We all fall asleep on the Hawaii to LA flight - they are generally very late (11pm) and we are tired from the day in the sun then have a quick stop/breakfast and jump on the next flight to Boston. It isn't a big deal.

I am little confused by your message though. You are flying home on Jan 27 but don't have a ticket home yet? If you are trying to get to Boston I'd try to find a flight there not to Hartford.

It usually takes me a full week to get over the jetlag. I tend to get a lot of reading done that week :-)
