Hello, a travel agent in my city told me this, and said you have to ask for the refund becaurse the airlines will not automatically give it to you. I was curious if anyone know about this?

Depends on the airline.

Each one has its own cancellation policy.

For example, on Continental, you can get a refund within 24 hours of initial booking only if you're an Onepass member and you signed in as such when you buy the ticket on their website.

Other airlines will have their own restrictions.

American allows you to put a courtesy hold on a reservation for 24 hours with fare guarantee.

But once a non-refundable reservation is purchased and ticketed then it's a done deal.

I've purchased tickets online at the United website and canceled them for a full refund. For award tickets that I booked online I had to call to cancel. For revenue tickets I called but I think you can do it online if the ticket was bought online.

I was signed in at united.com as a MileagePlus member when I purchased the tickets.

I just posted this in response to another question:
From Susan Stellin's book "How to Travel Practically Anywhere."
"When you purchase a plane ticket, you usually have twenty-four hours to change your mind and get a full refund. . . . [This rule] was adopted long ago to give customers a chance to address any second thoughts or for a travel agency to review a ticket and correct any problems. . . . Most airlines and travel agencies still offer customers twenty-four hours to cancel a ticket and get a full refund, but many companies don't go out of their way to tell customers about this policy. . . . .But if you want to buy a different ticket after canceling the one you bought by mistake, keep in mind that you can book only currently available fares." My travel agent has 48 hours to "VOID" a ticket. Most agents dont void their fees. And many will charge an additional fee to void the ticket if its beyond the initial 24 hour period. The charge usually takes 10 days or so to come off the credit card.
