How to get a first-class ticket on Air France/Delta?

Patty - or anyone else - any experience with using Amex Platinum's business class companion ticket? I will call them when the flights open up - but I see that I can get one free with my card according to the terms of the card membership.
I have not had great experience with Amex and their travel department... I usually know more then they do

With the Amex Platinum IAP, the first passenger pays full fare business and the second passenger pays taxes only. With advance planning to Europe, you can usually get 2 discounted business class tickets for less.
