How safe are intra-China flights?
We're considering a tour to China next year that includes several flights between cities. A neighbor is a just-retired NW pilot who flew the US-Asia routes, and he says they're risky, at best, but are starting to make improvements. He also told me to avoid flying over on Air China. Have any of you travelled there, and what was your experience? Appreciate any info.

Most of the planes used in China are pretty new - WAY YOUNGER than most planes that NW's flying.
And the safety records of all major Chinese airlines have been highly respectable in the last 15 years.
All Chinese airlies (including Air China) are split up from CAAC. And there doesn't seem to be any significant differences in safety records among Air China, China Eastern and China Southern - the big three.

Flew several intra-China flights in 2001. Planes were new and clean. Service was excellent, and they even gave "goody-bags" of souveniers before departure. The problem was not the planes. The problem was the airports. Chaotic. People may charge the gate since there are not always seat assignments. Whomever gets on the plane first, gets their choice of seats. Also, delays may occur and not many airport personel speak English. We were on a tour, so we were well taken care of, but I could see how the airports could be confusing for foreigners.
