How do you get an upgrade?/Anyone ever flown with Air France?

Having always went on package holidays previously I always listened with amazement when people tell of the brilliant upgrades to first class they managed to get. What is the best way to do this? Also has anyone any experience of flying with Air France?

If you have Delta miles, you can use those to upgrade to business class (but not first class) on Air France if your ticket is booked in one of the upgrade eligible fare classes. Otherwise you need to have elite status or hope for an overbooking in economy. The only time I've been upgraded on an international flight is coming back on DL from Frankfurt and the flight was overbooked in economy. I got to the gate late due to a late arriving connection and they had already released my seat to someone else.

It really doesn't happen these days unless there is a very good reason for them to do it.

I've been on many flights which have been jam-packed in Economy and virtually empty in business / first. Do people get upgraded to give everyone in economy more space? Do they Buffalo!

I agree with the others. I have only received one comp. upgrade in all my trans-atlantic travels. This happened last Spring when my flight to AMS from PRG on KLM was cancelled due to mechanical problems. As a result, I was put on a Czech Air flight to AMS a couple of hours later which caused me to miss my connecting flight back to the US. Fourtunately, there was another flight out of AMS a little later which had seats available. I politely explained to the gate agent that I missed my original connection because of mechanical reasons, which in turn was going to cause me to miss my connection in DET to MCI and that I would have to spend the night in DET. I requested an upgrade to business...and received that upgrade. If you feel you have a reason to request an upgrade, then do so as most times the perk won't be voluntarily offered. The airline in no way is obligated to accomadate the request. And always be calm, courteous and little smile doesn't hurt either....just don't be over the top. FYI...It seems most airlines would rather fly with empty seats in business class than give free upgrades as to maintain the value of this product.

By the way, I have flown with Air France in business and economy several times. I've never had any bad experiences.

Air France is a great airline and the business class is wonderful. However, at least from what I could gather, routes to Asia are impossible with miles and upgrades about non-existant. that's just what I found.

We've flown Air France several times (just this summer in fact) and we love it. On one trip a few years back from Paris to L.A. we (4 of us) were upgraded to business class. This was because (1) they had overbooked, and (2) I had forgotten to reserve seats beforehand. So I'd say if the plane isn't overbooked, you don't have a chance.
