Help need about onward trabel
 

I am flying into Cartegena, Colombia and I do not have a return date or location yet. I know I need proof of another flight, however I was told that the return flight should be within three months (it was a Jetblue clerk, not sure if shes right). I am planning on touring around South America for at least six months so I wanted to at least book a return flight 6 months from the date of departure. Also, the return flight will be from a different country than Colombia. So long story short is....Will a return trip at least 6 months after the date of departure from a different country suffice for my documentation for proof of onward travels. Also, does it make sense economically to buy the cheapest round trip possible, and lose the money for the return flight and buy a new ticket when I am sure of my return date, or should I try to change the flight around?

Another option would be to buy a fully refundable ticket for your return, if it's not a problem to have the funds tied up or the charge on your credit card until you make your decision about from where and when you'll return. Since it's refundable you could cancel and buy what you need then.

But, as you say, a cheap RT ticket might be the best option, unless you need proof of onward travel later in your trip, after the expiration of the homeward leg of the RT ticket.

You need proof of outbound flight for... a visa?

If you are planning on touring South America maybe find a cheap ticket out of Columbia to a neighboring country as proof?

Thanks MmePerdu....I think the cheap RT is the best option..and judging from other posts it seems that other countries' borders do not check the onwards travel plans like the airlines do.

Also if I buy a return ticket for 6 months after the departure, will I run into a problem about not obtaining a Colombian visa? I will not be spending more than the allowed amount of time in Colombia, but will they assume that I am since there are six months of elapsed time?

The return ticket doesn't need to be from Colombia to home. You can book an "open-jaw" ticket, flying into Colombia and home from another country. Then your intended stay in Colombia wouldn't be specified.
