help! I can't find a reasonable flight from Rome!
 

I have searched and searched for a flight to Los Angeles from Rome and the only thing my agent could find that was reasonable was a 6:55 am flight.

any tips or ideas?

You mean the only reasonable time? Or reasonable FARE at a good time?

Because if you just look at flight times, you have lots of choices. Basically, all non-stop FCO-US/Canada flights have much later mid-morning or early afternoon departure. It's only when you need to make another European connection you need to go early. For example:

Alitalia 9:55a to EWR
Continental 10:10a to EWR
Delta 10:15a to JFK
American 10:30 to JFK
Delta 10:55 to ATL
USAirways 11:15a to PHL
American 11:30a to ORD
Delta 12:20p to CVG
Air Canada 12:40p to YYZ
Delta 12:50p to JFK
Alitalia 1:35p to BOS
Alitalia 1:50p to JFK
Continental 2:00p to EWR

Same day connection to LAX are possible on any of these flights (the Alitalia to BOS will have only one choice on AA BOS-LAX, however).

If it were me, I'd grab it. With airfares anywhere being pretty expensive these days, and with bargains rarely to be found on a transatlantic flight in August, and then looking at a flight between Europe and the west coast of the U.S. (we're not exactly talking London-New York here), I'd chalk up the early-morning check-in as the price I had to pay. :)

At this late stage of the game, I would grab ANY seat that you can find to Rome for this summer. I fly Rome everyweek from the US and the flights are usually filled to the brim starting in March. Yesterday, we only had 5 business class seats open back from Rome and that is very unusual. The Chicago Tribune travel section last month stated that Rome is the number foreign city for Americans to travel to this year and competition for those seats nonstop will be fierce. Good Luck!
