Heathrow Terminal 5 : The Nightmare continues...
Amazing scenes at T5 today as Heathrow once again lives up to its legendary reputation for madness, chaos, angry scenes etc. This time they haven't lost everyone's luggage, they've refused to take it in the first place because the the baggage belts have gone bust in the brand new £4.5 billion terminal. Classic stuff:

The funniest post (so far) on Flyertalk.com was from a BA frequent flyer whose flight from T5 was eventually canceled. He tried to leave the departure area but discovered there's no easy way to do it. He wandered from one kiosk to the customer support (ha) desk to the lounge dragons - nobody could tell him how he could leave "landside." Eventually he found the exit door (behind Gate 11) and on leaving renamed T5 "Terminal Colditz."

I am actually fearing more about this coming weekend. BA still has to move its T4 operations over, and Skyteam airlines, including some new ones like CO and DL, will be arriving 3/30 at T4. Yikes!

They might sort it out but there will always be disasters at Heathrow. Last summer there was chaos, strikes I think. Summer before was something else. It's a British tradition, like losing at cricket. My advice coming from the US is try Zoom, Silverjet or Eos (in ascending order of cost) to Gatwick, Luton or Stansted.

What an absolute nightmare.
BA cancelled 66 flights for today (Sat) and already cancelling 30+ flights for Sunday.
"BA has confirmed an estimated 15,000 bags are stranded but one source has told the BBC that the number may be closer to 20,000. "
"A group of school pupils on flight BA285 to San Francisco also said they were told by the airline that their bags were not on board and they could choose whether or not to travel. They were bound for a skiing trip. "

The debacle is almost over.
Only 37 flights were cancelled on Sunday, and only 15,000 pieces of luggage have 'gone astray.'

The stranded baggage is now transported by lorry to Milan to get sorted there.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7325723.stm
From Milan, they will send it to the traveller's hotel. If the traveller has already left the hotel (which will often be the case) bags will be sent back to Heathrow, from there to Milan, from there to ???

It is now June 13, 2008. Does anyone have any current info about the problems at Terminal 5? Has anything improved that resulted in a good experience?
After 4 flights into and out of LHR last June, we pretty much said not again, but it looks like if we use our AA miles we are stcuk with it. Hope somebody has some good news after a recent flight.

Avoid LHR this weekend as the waste of space called GWB is doing his farewell tour and to show what he really thinks of the British has decided to land at LHR instead of some US military base out in the sticks.
MAJOR disruption is expected

They are phasing in use of Terminal 5 very slowly so no new BA flights till 17 September. See their web pages. It is your fault if you do not do as you are told. Lots of hi-tech stuff.
