Headphones on a plane
 

DH and I will be traveling soon and have flights with music/movies available. Is it possible to bring our own earphones and have them be compatible with the airplane plugs?

Sure -most of my headphones have adapters so they fit even if the airplane has a different configuration.

Depending on the airline, you may find that during take off and landing, you will be required to wear the headphones provided by the airline.

What airline requires you to take out you to use the ones they provide, pray tell?

Some airplanes use single plug jacks, and others use a double plug jack, so if your headphones came with a single to double adaptor bring that along.

Here's the thing about using your headphones before reaching cruise. Some FAs are fussy about no electronics being used, and they may wonder if you're still using your player when they see your headphone.

Just show him/her your headphones are plugged to the aircraft's plugs. And if they are noise-canceling type, turn the NC off. You'll get a mouthful if a LED is lit.

Virgin Atlantic. Do you think I pulled this comment out of thin air? Since I was in Upper Class and the headphones are great, I didn't need my own. I travelled last week from MIA to LHR. Read my comment, I said only during take off and landing. Presumably you don't need to hear the announcements especially during an emergency which is most likely at take off or landing.
