Have to cancel Delta award tix - best to resched. or back into account?

We have two RT FC/BC tix SFO to CDG in March. It turns out that for family reasons we need to cancel this trip.

There's a $150 fee per ticket to cancel according to Delta website; does anyone know if there's any difference in fees to reschedule or to just take back the miles?

Of course we are hoping to take the trip at a later date, or else save the miles for those "Round the World" award tickets they are offering.

The chart doesn't reproduce but you can see on on Delta website.

http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...vice-fees.html

It seems a redeposit or change in award travel may be free, but only if you are already super premium status.

And "pay with miles" the website explains is different, with charges the same as if you were changing a ticket paid for with cash.

Thanks, laurie_ann -- it was all miles (except for taxes) rather than pay with miles; I'm not premium status so I guess it is fees for me.

If you just booked and are withing the 24 hour cancellation window, you should be able to redeposit without charges.

I don't think that fee table in the link above applies in the case of rescheduling. If you want to travel to/from the same cities, same airlines, same classes of service, but do it it on another date then you just need a reservation change, not reticketing/reissuing.

You should cancel the reservation for March, but keep the ticket. That is, don't (also) cancel the ticket for a refund/redeposit.

The ticket will expire one year from the date of issue, so as soon as April if you booked at 330 days in advance. Making new reservations with that same ticket does not extend the ticket validity. The travel on the new reservation would have to be completed on/before the issue date.

How do you do that? Does Delta allow you to have a FF ticket that has all segments open?

If you didn't pay the $150 to redeposit the miles and get the taxes refunded then you still own a ticket.

I had to give CC # to cancel the trip (Or so I thought/it indicated) -- so apparently I have cancelled tix as well. Lesson learned....

I did get trip insurance but not sure how helpful that will be (I also have an AF trip scheduled through Cheapo Air from Paris-Venice-Nice-via-Paris).

I thought with Delta, any change in dates with everything the same, will also incur a $150 fee?

You do unless you are in the 24 hour window after booking (same as if you were paying cash for a ticket) or have Platinum or Diamond status. Delta charges for any changes. Other airlines have different policies.

To answer the original question (reschedule existing vs. redeposit and start from scratch), it is in general better to redeposit and start from scratch (if you are not at the premium level that allows redeposit without charge).

This is because if you start from scratch, you get a fresh 24 hours on the new reservation to change or cancel without penalty, while if you make a change to an existing, you don't get a fresh 24 hours from that change (notwithstanding that the $150 fee is the same in either case).

The only catch is that the miles are not redeposited instantly (could take "up to 2 days" but usually doesn't take as long as that). However, the helpful agent I got said that if I needed it right away, she'd make a phone call while I was on hold and get it done on the spot, so there's a way around that as well if you don't have enough spare miles to wait a day or so for the redeposit.
