Gumbo To Go....

I am taking frozen gumbo my family in a "seafood deprived" destination. Does anyone know if this will be a problem?

TSA said "frozen soup" is OK for checked luggage. I plan to put it in its own little duffle bag: Frozen Tupperware inside double ziplocks, bubble wrap to keep it stable.

Just in case it gets lost, will the airline (AA) have a tag for "spoilable" items?

You don't say how long the gumbo will be in transit, so not sure if you need to keep it frozen. AA limits the amount of dry ice in checked bags to 5 pounds, 4.4. pounds in carry on, and there is a service charge of US$40 for either.

If you are not concerned about it thawing in transit, your plan sounds reasonable, though I'd suggest that you pack it in such a way that it will not bounce around (like stuff the bag with bubble wrap) and also tape the lid on the container.
An alternative would be to ship it via FedEx or UPS to arrive when you do.

Thanks, Seamus

It sounds as though I'll be OK. Scheduled flight is 5 hours. I'm not concerned about it thawing. But I hadn't thought about throwing in a little dry ice. I'll add that to the list.

God bless you, JeanneB. A woman who delivers gumbo to her friends is a woman who deserves much in return.

My son once carried two muffaletas from Central Grocery on a flight, and the entire plane was salivating.

Our daughter used to fly from North Carolina with two pounds of Allen and Son's BBQ for us, but we never figured out how to get hush puppies here without their getting soggy.

LOL! I never tried to transport a hush puppy!

The gumbo is a surprise. They'll swoon when they see it!
