Going to Canada.
 

I'm going to be going to Canada soon, and was wondering how customs worked. This'll be my very first time going out of the United States, and it's just going to be me, and I'm not sure how this works.

I'm going from Indianapolis, Indiana, to Toronto to Calgary, Canada. Than on the way back I'm going Calgary to Minneapolis, Minnesota then back to Indianapolis.

Where is customs located? How does this work? Etc Etc. If you could give me any pointers or advice, I'd appreciate it.

You'll pass through inspection in Toronto, then follow the signs for domestic connections.

On your return, you'll go through US inspection before you board and your flight will land at MSP as a domestic flight.

On your way to Canada you'll clear Immigration and Customs when you land in Toronto.

On you way back you'll clear US Immigration & Customs before you board the plane in Calgary.

The procedure is simple. When you land in Canada you'll deplane and proceed to Immigration/Passport Control (just follow the signs and your fellow passengers) where officials will review your Passport. You'll then proceed to the Baggage Claim area to retrieve any checked luggage after which you pass through the Customs checkpoint and then exit the airport.

On your way home once you get your boarding pass you'll be directed to the US Immigration line where officials will check your passport. You'll then go directly to the Customs area where your luggage will be screened. If you are checking luggage you'll give it to the airlines baggage handlers (your luggage will be checked through to your final destination). You then proceed to the Security checkpoint and on to your departure gate.

When you land in Minneapolis you simply deplane and proceed to the departure gate for your flight to Indianapolis.

Note that Canada is a little unique in that you go through US immigration and customs before boarding your flight to the US. In most countries, you go through immigration and customs when you first arrive in a country rather than before you leave a country.

I hope you don't have a DUI. Canada will not let you in if you have had a DUI during the past 10 years.

Nope. No DUI. My record is totally clean. :)
