Yes

If carrying on the laptop, you will be required to take it out of your bag and put it in a tray by itself. So pack accordingly.

Keith is correct and he means as you pass through security. I've been caught several times behind a traveller who has to unpack their entire carryon just to get the laptop out from the bottom of a suitcase. Pack accordingly means have your laptop handy, ready to whip out quickly.

Flying from Palma Mallorca to Bristol U.K. last week, I was asked by security to show that my laptop worked by switching it on. It may not be enough just to take it out of its case.

Make sure that you have enough battery life left in both your laptop and cell phone for these instances. I've had to turn my cell phone on for security as well.
