Flying with grandkids on international flight
 

We are thinking of bringing our 2 grandchildren over here from Italy for some of the summer vacation. I would go over for them, and DD would come here to bring them back. We are thinking of using BA for the flights and wonder what paperwork we would need to do that. They have a different last name to us, and would be travelling on their Italian passports, whereas we have US passports. Any help or suggestions welcome.

Have you contacted the airlines yet? One wonders if rules are consistent with all countries and airlines.

How old are the grandchildren? Are you transitIng through the UK (since you mention BA)?

The rules depend on the country being visited, or in Italy's case EU rules, they are not consistent for all countries worldwide and those rules can change (eg South Africa who famously had very strict entry requirements for children) and the airlines will follow those rules plus might add some of their own.

It could be just a case of getting a letter of consent from the parents, even if that is not necessary, best to have such a letter esp in the case of the grandchildren needing medical attention abroad. I would advise checking with the Italian consulate, UK Office (if going thru the UK) and the airline.

When we flew into Heathrow for a UK visit with our 14 year old granddaughter we needed a notarized letter from her parents acknowledging us as her grandparents and giving us authority over any medical decisions to be made in the UK. Despite this letter, before letting us into the UK one official grilled my granddaughter about whether we were actually her grandparents, did she come to the UK with us voluntarily, what was the purpose of the visit, etc. Just letting you know so you aren't surprised if this happens to you. Actually, we were happy that the UK officials were so vigilant guarding against child trafficking.

The children are 8 and 10, and we will be transiting through LHR so I will get in touch with BA to find out what their requirements are, and I will need to find out what the US authorities need in the way of letters or other paperwork to allow the children into the country.
