flight change and immigration time insight: Dallas to Frankfurt to Vienna

I'm planning a flight to Vienna, Austria (VIE). I'm coming from Dallas (DFW) on American Airlines landing into Frankfurt (FRA) Terminal 2 Area E and catching a flight on Air Berlin to Vienna from Frankfurt (FRA) Terminal 2 Area E.

Assumptions:
1. no baggage check-in (i'm carrying on all my bags on the plane so no need to pick up)
2. flights are on time if not earlier
3. coach seatting on a 777
4. online/web check-in

Flight details:
DFW -> FRA: lands at 8:30 am (american airlines lands Terminal 2 Area E)
FRA -> VIE: flight departs at 9:25am (air berlin departs Terminal 2 Area E)

if you take this information and you have a roller bag (no check-in baggage), is this possible to make this connection? Has anyone ever done this before? Do i have to go outside and then back inside the airport or any weird nuances of that airport? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance!

You connect airside with going through passport control and security check in T2. So you will not have to go "outside". At FRA, Terminal 2 is more compact/smaller than Terminal 1, that should help.
Usually, boarding times in Germany for domestic or short-haul flights are more or less fictitious. Your 9.30am flight to Vienna probably gives you a boarding time at 9.00, but in reality that's when the aircraft will dock at the jetway.
So 55 minutes transfer time look extremely tight but unless your incoming flight from Dallas was late, I would still rank it as doable. If you had checked baggage, it would hardly make a difference.

Checked luggage makes no difference whatsoever . . . Since you would check your bags through.

You go through passport control the first place you land and customs (where you collect your bags) at your ultimate destination.

Are these on one ticket or booked separately? That is the big issue . . .

Assuming the flights are on the same ticket, is there a later flight that they could potentially transfer you to if your first flight is delayed? I hesitate to book short connections later in the evening because my rebooking options are very limited (or non-existent) and I'm likely to be stuck overnight if anything is delayed. However if it's a morning flight, if you are delayed and miss the connection then you still have a good chance of catching another flight within a reasonable time.

AA shows it as a legal connection. The FRA-VIE flight will be on Niki. The next flight from FRA isn't until 5 PM, so making the morning flight is important.

Tell the FA that you have a short connection - they may expedite your disembarkation if your AA flight is running late.

I had a one hour connection last month coming from Dallas to Frankfort and changing planes to go to Prague. I made it fine, even having to switch terminals and go back through security. I was really worried and hurried like mad, but had about 20 minutes to spare once I got to the gate. You should be fine.

I don't think the OP will see/read your post. One time/ only timer - hasn't been back since starting this.
