first class worth it?

Is it worth the extra $$$$$ to move up to first class for a trip from the east coast to Hawaii on Delta???

Gardyloo Nov 9th, 2005 08:48 AM

If you can afford the extra $$$$$ then it's worth it. Otherwise, not.

Whether or not it's worth it is a decision that only you can make because it depends entirely on your budget and your priorities. For my purposes that extra money takes up too much of my travel budget. But if you can afford it, then it would make a long flight much more comfortable.

Not on Delta! Continental and other airlines have international business class seats on many flights to Hawaii. DL has domestic first class, which is much worse.

So, if you want to fly FC, go with some other airline.

is it worth the extra miles to get First Class with skymiles? what about upgrading with skymiles? two people are going - one seat would be an upgrade with skymiles from a paid coach seat & one "free" with skymiles.

Well, do you already have one economy ticket booked and paid already? If so, then you have to stick with DL.

Like PM says, we can't tell you whether it's worth it. But I am telling you that what you get with DL 1st class is domestic F seats - 39" pitch, 2-2-2 seating on a 767. Versus 2-1-2 seating, 55" pitch on Continental.

Do you have specific flights in mind?

If your route is operated using aircraft equipped with Business Elite seats, then it's more worth it than if it's one equipped with domestic first class seats. I think BE seats on are ATL-OGG, not sure if they're on any other flights to Hawaii.

Have you already purchased your one ticket? Did you purchase an upgradeable fare or did you check what the lowest upgradeable with miles fare is if you haven't purchased your ticket yet?

If you have enough miles for two FC awards, then you could also check availability on CO or NW operated flights, but if you need to purchase one ticket and upgrade, that wouldn't be an option.

Have you checked if there are any award or upgrade seats in FC for your dates? This may be a pointless discussion if there are no seats available or are you also considering purchasing FC tickets?

Only if you drink alcohol!

And if you want to be served food that looks edible, OK semi-edible. And the seat IS generally much more comfortable. Generally. I don't expect much from airlines anymore.

Paying for first class is becoming less and less worth it because airlines don't adequately compensate you when they are unable to provide the service when you board.

To me proper compensation includes refunding more than the difference between the fare paid and the lowest coach fare. In essence that does mean a free flight.

This in turn explains the downward spiral to the point where most of the first class seats are occupied by passengers doing free upgrades.

Depends on you. I am a little 5 foot tall 110 lb. woman, and have no problem with economy class. I have been in first class and it wasn`t worth it to me. One advantage to being small. (One of few)
