carry on bag size issue for two travellers

Hi, because of the doctor's orders I will have to travel w/wheeled carry on from now on instead of shoulder bag. Me and my husband had purchased Briggs and Riley carry on the exact dimension of the outside w/wheels and everything are: 21.5" x 15.5" x 8.5". We will only have this bag and a small laptop bag for the two of us. The airline that we are planning says the bags must be: 9" x 14 x 22 or 45 linear inches. It seems that we are .5" over. Is this going to be an issue in the airport. I heard from other people that this bag fits into the overhead on our carrier- Continental flight Newark to Rome, Italy on B-767-400ER. Or do you think it would not fit? All thoughts are appreciated. It is an expensive bag and if we would not be able to utilize it, It would become a bad value of the money.

From what I see being carried onto planes these days, you should be fine!

At worst, they will make you gate check it. So I would suggest you have vital items, such as medicines and valuables, in a tote you can carry on. They do make shoulder bags that can ride on a wheeled bag, which would get you around your doctor's proscription.

Your only issue is the bag a bit wider than allowed. Which is same as my Delsey, which I've carried on to many CO flights with no issue. The bag will definitely fit the outside bins of the 767-400.
