enforcing the one carry on rule?

I am usually a proponent of only carrying on a small bag w/a book and my wallet, really just a larger purse.

BUT....i am flying alone w/a child, therefore i need to carry a diaper bag and then i have several bulky items that i can't check, but won't fit in a diaper bag. (namely my video camera and a nebulizer to give my daughter her respitory treatments)

if i don't have a purse, will they give me a hard time w/having a diaper bag and a carry-on? the non-diaper bag is a messenger style book bag, so it's by no means a suitcase or even an overnight size bag.

what do you all think?

TROLL!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely you jest. If a real question, why ask here? Why not call the darned airline?????? They make the decisions, not a Fodors Board contributor.

Curious

From what I have seen, it is being enforced to the "T".We get spoiled carrying our lives on board and its tough to readjust.I cant speak for everyone of course but thats what I've seen.I did see a lady a couple of people behind me helping out another lady by carrying one of her bags.

sorry for the double post, didn't realize about the refresh button.

i am NOT a troll...guess i just am hoping they'll bend the rules a bit, and if i call and ask and they say no...well then what do i do then? show up KNOWING they'll say no to me w/two bags? at least if i don't ask, i can always hope i'll hit a kindly gate agent who will realize why i can't check either of these bags and that i am not just trying to hog the overhead space for no good reason.

A medical device sould not count as one of your carry-on items, so if you are buying a ticket for the child, you should be allowed two bags and two "personal items" in addition to the nebulizer. But don't take my word for it -- check with the airline.

i did check w/american and they said it was fine...that in addition to the carryon i could have a purse, briefcase or laptop, so that my bag w/camera and nebulizer would be my "personal bag"

shouldn't your kids count as carry-on too?

Flew Continental today. Security at airport inforcing 1 carryon rule. So I put my pocketbook in my shopping bag. So..put smaller bags in larger and its ok. The camera should fit into the diaper bag or get a bigger diaper bag.
