End of month problem with NW
So, as expected, many NW pilots got up to their 90-hour work load for the month and declined to do overtime work before the weekend.
An unofficial tally lists canceled flights as: Fri 7/27 125 Sat 7/28 178 Sun 7/29 211 (as of 8pm CDT) That's a lot of flights for an airline with about 1,300 daily flights. What's interesting is that the threads about this NWA issue on Flyertalk and Airliners.net are significantly less civil and more pointed than a month ago. The pilots are no more satisfied with management than a month ago. It'll be interesting to see NWA's 2Q result the coming Tuesday. |
Is NW rebooking on other airlines or do they have to wait on the next available NW flight? Unfortunately we have flights scheduled on the last day of Aug.

They will try to put you on their other flights, but will also use other carriers. Problem is that most airlines are running close to 90% load factor these months.
BTW, check your itinerary online often. Your flight may get canceled early. You can then have time to get the alternative arranged. |
KatGio - Oh, you're going at the end of August, not July. The problem should be less by then as NW has cut the schedule throughout the month of August onwards. So, by late August, there should be enough pilots still under the 90-hour mark to fly the planes.
Now, unless the pilots do up their tactics and do more sick out. |
I have a friend who went to Las Vegas Saturday.NW had cancelled his flight by last Wednesday. He called and they put him on a USAir flight, no questions asked, no problems, not concerned about the class of service he was originally booked in.Just anxious to get him where he was going.

Are any cancellations affecting the Asia flts?
|
No, only domestic. And mostly on the DC9 and 320 fleet.

From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Aug. 1:
"Northwest Airlines, in an attempt to restore reliable flight operations, on Wednesday reached a tentative agreement with its pilots union to address pilot staffing problems and announced that it will pay bonuses to employees who have perfect attendance through Labor Day. Also CEO Doug Steenland took responsibility for the airline's poor operational performance this summer and said that management had underestimated the negative effects that some aspects of its 2006 labor contracts would have on employees. The Eagan-based carrier was forced to cancel several hundred flights in late June and again in late July because it did not have enough pilots to fly its full schedule." |
