easyJet westard-ho

From the BBC, another indication that Europe's no-frills airlines want to go trans-Atlantic.
easyJet, second biggest of the cheapo carriers, is going to link with Norwegian, a significant newcomer across the Atlantic, and WestJet, Canada's second largest airline which has recently expanded to trans-ocean flights itself. The original budget model was for each flight to operate individual legs, with no connections to anything including the airline's other flights. The BBC suggests that integration won't be complete, lacking automatic transfer of luggage. Still, expanding competition should keep prices down. It also reminds that misty (and mostly mythic) memories of elegant airline cruising are as long-gone as the biplane.

SOUnds fine to me, I always fly Easyjet within Europe. Have no idea what your editorial comment is supposed to mean about "elegant" airline cruising as they fly regular planes just like larger national airlines do, I didn't see any difference at all.

I cannot remember connecting in Gatwick very well since last time was ages ago.
But don't you need to go through UK passport control, i.e. technically enter the UK, to get to baggage claims to pick up and re-check your luggage?
If so, I am wondering how much extra time you need to be on the safe side re. possible delays at passport control, baggage claim, lines at re-check desk, crowds at security for entering again from landside.
That does not sound too tempting IMO.
