Duty Free Liquor
 

WE are traveling from US to Brussels and then connecting to Naples Italy. If we purchase liquour on the plane will we be allowed to carry it on the plane to Naples or will it be confiscated going through security in Brussels?

Well, that depends.

If your ticketed all the way through when you check-in in the U.S. then you shouldn't need to recheck your bags so whatever you have on hand will be fine; <b>however</b>, as a precaution, do not break any seals -- I had a PHL-NUE via FRA flight that I had to go through security again and I had a bottle of gin from the PHL duty free but it was allowed through as the bag seal had no been broken (I showed them my itinerary and tickets and told them what happened).

If your itinerary has you flying different non-FF alliance airlines <b>or</b> (read as Boolean OR) when you check-in in the U.S. you only get tickets to Brussels and have to check-in in Brussels, then I would stick the booze in the luggage you will be re-checking. I would not count on the kindness of the gate security to let you through with your booze after exiting the sterile area and checking-in, seal or no seal.

tl;dr: if you don't have to exit the sterile area then you are golden. Otherwise, YMMV.

Thanks for the reply. We are leaving Ft. Lauderdale via USAirways throughout the flights. Our confirmation lists Brussels as BRU and Naples as NAP. Does this mean we will not be leaving a sterile area? We have never traveled this route before. Thanks again for great information.

I thought the rules regarding liquids through airside security at EU airports applied only to liquids bought at another EU airport or an an EU based airline.

Dunno but they let me bring my North American purchased booze through. If I had known that three years later I would have to make a detailed post about it, I would have taken notes.

From what I read on Frankfurt airport's website about the EU regulations re. connecting with duty free liquids/booze:
Okay when bought at any EU airport's duty free shop, any US intl airport's duty free shop (and a few other non EU airports) - but NOT on board of non EU airlines.
The packages must have the sales slip sealed inside the transparent bag. And the bag must not be opened until customs is cleared at final destination.
I assume that US airports have those special bags, while the non EU airlines might not.

This link to page on Brussels airport website would seem to say that liquor purchased on board an EU carrier (like Air France) but not a US carrier (like US Air) can be carried on.
