Dulles International - 70 minute layover enough time?
Hi everyone.
I am looking to fly from Chicago to Copenhagen, and the best price I've found has a 70 minute layover in Dulles for the connecting flight. Will that be enough time to catch my flight to Copenhagen? I don't know if I will have to go through security again or how any of that works. Perhaps one of you can offer some input? Thanks! |
You should be fine with 70 minutes. With that said, flight delays and bad weather are part of life. I recently had a 55 minute connection through IAD to VIE and had no problems. You'll go through security at ORD and won't have to do so again at IAD unless you decide to exit the airside for the landside.

If you are flying in the winter, I wouldn't risk the 70 minutes. In good weather, probably fine if your Chicago flight isn't delayed. You might want to figure out a back-up plan if you miss the Copenhagen flight, for example, knowing that you could take a later flight to Paris and connect to Copenhagen or some other routing.

In mid December I had a 70 minute layover there and it was just fine. I don't know your airline but I was flying United and only had to walk down about 6 gates.
No security until you get to Copenhagen. |
As usual, no one can truly give you the answer you want - which is that it will be fine. It will be - if your first flight is not delayed. But who can know about that. You can check on-time average, but ORD and IAD in winter can be problematic.
What airlines? USAirways has multiple flights ORD-IAD daily for $110; JetBlue for slightly more. I would not risk missing on overseas connection for that amount of money - since a hotel for the night if you miss the flight would cost more than that. |
I assume this is a connection from United to SAS but don't see it offered as an option at united or travelocity on a couple of dates that I tried.
Are both legs, ORD-IAD and IAD-CPH, on the same ticket? You won't go through security again. It is enough time but I would probably book the next earlier flight from Chicago and have this one as a backup. |
