Don't Buy Flight Insurance

Burn your money instead. It will be less frustrating and every but as effective. We booked a flight in early December, 2013, insured through Travel Guard (AIG member). On January 7, 2013, the date of our flight, I received a phone call that my mother was gravely ill. I was forced to cancel the flight to comfort my mother. Mom dies a week later on January 13, 2014. I sent a claim form together with a copy of the death certificate and explanation of the events leading up to the concellation. The claim was denied because her date of death was after the fdate of the flight. Seriously? AIG and Travel Guard have perpetuated a fraud and thft by deception. They do not intend to cover anything, unless you the insured happens to die on the date of your flight. And then since you're the insured you won't be alive to file the claim...SAVE YOUR MONEY...SAVE YOURSELF.

I've not had a claim against Travel Guard to date, but I did have one against Access America some years ago due to a surgical procedure that made travel impossible. Access America paid promptly. Perhaps you should try filing with Travel Guard again. Surely, under the circumstances, they will respond favorably. Please let us know if they come around.

Perhaps some documentation of the date of your mother's illness would support your claim.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss.

However was the policy written to cover serious illness of a family member or (just) the death? Every policy is different.

An unfortunate experience to be sure, but perhaps as abram suggests you will be more successful if you provide adequate documentation of your mothers' grave illness at the time of the flight. It was her illness, not her death, that prevented you from flying, which may or may not be covered under your policy. Regardless of the eventual results of your claim I think your advice "don't buy travel insurance" is not the lesson to be learned from this experience. Rather it should be "read and understand the fine print before you buy travel insurance"

I have year round travel insurance as part of a package of health care insurance. I try to remember to review it beforehand when I am in the process of booking a trip, and often am surprised to realize I had forgotten just what is, and what isn't covered. For example, I just learned that the maximum payout is less that the total cost of the trip I'm considering,

The claim was denied because her date of death was after the fdate of the flight. Seriously?

The claim you put in was that you didn't fly because of your mother's death which as this occurred after you were supposed to fly was quite rightly rejected.

Put in a claim for her being seriously ill WHICH WAS WHY YOU DIDN'T FLY.

Sorry this happened and for your loss. But as you write it the claim was rightfully denied. They won't pay for something that occurred after the dates of travel. So start over and do it correctly and you may be successful.

(I sure hope you read these responses since we are trying to help . . . But I'm not hopeful since you just registered to post your complaint. Many who do this never return to the forums . . . )

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and then you have to deal with a denied claim on top of it.
Travel Guard paid us in full for a trip we had to cancel due to unexpected surgery and treatment that included six flights including BusClass US to Europe. I provided detailed documentation forms, clinical notes from doctors, etc. Hopefully with additional documentation , your claim will be paid in full.

My dad was diagnosed with heart blockage requiring bypass 8 days before my intended flight. Because I had purchased a Travelguard plan which covered immediate family members, and paid the premium within 15 days of booking, preexisting conditions were even covered.
my dad's doctor completed his part, and I received full reimbursement.
as dotheboy..notes above, refile with doc' note that the ILLNESS prompted you to cancel, not the death.
My sympathies.
