Domestic or Foreign Airline?

Flying to Barcelona from Detroit in May. Never flown internationally. Some better traveled
friends claim I will get better treatment on a foreign airline like Iberia,Lufthansa or BOAC (more space, more comfort, etc.)
Have any of you had experience along these lines?

I find pretty much zero difference between US and foreign carriers. Others disagree, but that's life. FWIW, I fly across the Atlantic at least 6 to 10 times each year. I usually fly on Delta or Northwest.

Regardless, I don't think anyone would consider Iberia to be a quality airline, so no need to prioritize them over an American carrier. Even if you like Lufthansa (I find them very, very ordinary), connecting in Frankfurt is a waste of your time. BA doesn't work, since it requires a double-connection (DTW-xxx-LHR-BCN).

Frankly, for this itinerary, the American carriers are decent options. Taking Delta/Northwest on DTW-AMS-BCN, would probably be my preferred option. Air France, via CDG would be good, too. Otherwise, connecting with Continental or Delta, via New York would be good options.

BOAC became British Airways (or BA NEVER British Air) in 1974

If you want a free drink (wine, beer, alcohol) go with the foreign airlines. If you want an airline that turns off the fasten seatbelt sign, go with a foreign airline.

But most people know this so if the price is $200 cheaper, go with the U.S. airline.

Wally we already discussed that you get free beer and wine on Delta, remember?
I agree with Travelgourmet-either her itinerary or fly to and out of JFK or Atlanta nonstop to Barcelona.
