Are there any legitimate travel companies for discount business travel to South Africa from the US?

But do realize that if anything goes pear shaped - anything at all, the airline won't even talk to you. You'll have to go through the TA. And flights to/from SA can have a lot of issues with IRROPS, delays, cancellations. Me personally, I'd maybe risk it for some itineraries but not to SA

Have a look at airtreks.com. I’ve used them several times in years past without incident.

This is incorrect. The airline is obliged to look after a traveller once travel has commenced. So if a flight is cancelled or delayed, they’ll rebook or do whatever is necessary. You don’t go thru a TA for IROPs. The TA takes care if everything before travel but not during. Travellers become the airlines responsibility at that point.
