Delta/Virgin Atlantic carryon sizes
 

We'll be flying on Delta and Virgin Atlantic in Sept. Their websites state their carryon size requirements are 22x14x9. My carryon is 22x14x10. I wonder if that extra inch is a problem. I really like my carryon and hope I don't have to replace it. Thanks.

Is it pliable or rigid? If it can easily crunch down to 9" so it fits into the measuring device, you'll be ok. They don't get the tape measure out, they ask you to dump it into the measuring frame, so if you can make it fit, you're fine.

Thank you michelhuebeli. I just read that Virgin Atlantic has a weight limit of 13 lbs. for carryons. We're very light packers, so I think we'll be OK. Has anyone had their carryons weighed?

On VS (Virgin) yes --

Oh yes - many times, on many airlines. Often they are being weighed while you check in, then - if approved - a sticker is affixed. Come to think of it, I've had them weighed many more times than I've had to put them into the size-checking frame.

It's called "clothing with many many pockets" - nobody has ever checked my bulging coats and cargo pants, the contents of which (and weight) can easily reach that of another bag...

The extra inch is not a problem.

Depending on the age and model of the plane, the above-seat storage varies a great deal. Believe it's the 737-900 that is the smallest actually. People abuse what they drag on and put more than one piece in the overhead, leaving the later boarders no choice but to gate check. Best to go with a flexible (stuffable) carry-on. Ditto for the "underseat". If you sit in the aisle as I typically do, the foot space is much narrower than the middle or window due to "that box" that sits between the seat legs. I laugh when I see totes advertised at 15" being for "underseat" in the best of "travel" catalogues. Lots of times my Lucase 21" cannot be brought on the plane, so I always pack it thinking it'll have to be checked and bring another LeSportsac soft bag to stuff above me. Be prepared to have it checked, but we'll hope otherwise for you! And yes, I have a fabulous black hooded windbreaker w removable sleeves by Magellan that has 12 pockets, so I stuff my heavier carryon things in it that I need on the plane -- headphones, Kindle, magazine, glasses, etc. Always travel in clothes with pockets!
