I'm not having any luck w/Delta miles. They have been adding up for a few years, from my AmEx cards, and now I want to use them to fly to Bangkok first class. I'm told that I cannot use Delta miles on the United flights I want, ... miles only good on domestic flights if I fly on United. According to the posts I'm reading here, this isn't true. I see that some of you have used your Delta miles on their partner airlines to Europe and other places. What am I doing wrong???

Go here for a complete list of Delta's partner airlines and what type of awards are available on each:

It's true that you can only redeem Delta Skymiles for United domestic/Puerto Rico/USVI flights. If you look on the partner airline chart under United, you'll see that there are only two types of awards offered.
I would suggest trying to use your Skymiles on Singapore or Malaysia or possibly Northwest now with the new alliance.

NO problem using Delta miles. I have use the AMEX Plat Mem Rewards, many more options for redemption. Hotels, airlines, etc. For example, transfer to USAir and you CAN use it on United to Asia! Delta has many partners to Asia, such as Singapore Airlines #1 airline in the world, Air France, Korean Air, Air Malaysia, etc, etc, etc,.
We are traveling 2 first class to Bangkok stopping over in SIN with these miles. Persistence is the key.
By the way, here is a tip:
Since the Asian carriers are partners with so many US airlines, they generally alot only one seat in each class per day to each carrier. (i.e., only one seat in 1st to Bangkok each day, etc.) With persistence you will get what you want.
It all depends on whether you want to pay or fly free. I will take a little inconvenience than pay any day!

I too am a Platimum Am Ex holder and am flying business class on Alatalia through Delta FF Miles leaving Jan 16, 04 and returning Jan 27. I called Am Ex and gave them my travel agent's number and she transfered my Am Ex miles to my Delta and made my reservations with no problems from Miami to Milan, Milan to Cairo and I already have my assigned seats. Long live Am Ex and travel agents!
