Delta from SFO to Rome - Any recent experiences?

I've been checking schdules for a trip next year and Delta has what I am looking for (early arrival in Rome, 12:45pm departure from Rome with same day arrival in SFO). The latest posts that I can find about Delta/Rome service are from 2009. Are there any more recent experiences with the Delta/Rome routes?. Some require a plane change in JFK and some in Atlanta. Any preference between the two in terms of ease of operations? Thanks for any feedback.

Are you wanting to start and end in Rome? There's a seasonal flight JFK/Pisa that might not be loaded for your dates yet (you didn't state your dates). I prefer Atlanta for transfers although Delta is redoing their facilities at JFK. Atlanta can have thunderstorm delays (depends on time of year), but JFK seems to have delays for lots of reasons.

I leave in a week (not SFO)and am flying through Atlanta on the way over and JFK on the way back just because the times worked for me. I also look at which aircraft is on the route.

Delta has some DTW/FCO flights, but perhaps the times don't work for you. What site are you using to search? Delta sight is screwy and doesn't show all flights unless you keep tweaking times (you'll get different results/connections by tweaking).

Thanks kybourbon. We are not going until June, so I have lots of time to find something and just am doing some preliminary snooping around getting a feel for things. I know there will be more routes added as time goes by.

Yes, we'll be flying in and out of Rome, renting a car, driving to Orvieto for a night or two and then spending 10 nights in Spello.

I'm using Kayak to search.

If you can go through Atlanta rather than JFK, I would suggest doing it. JFK is a pit. Even Crown Room at JFK was dirty and crowded when we flew through there on Delta to Rome in March 2010. I understand they will be doing some remodeling, but until they do, I'd go through Atlanta. It's big and there can be delays, but it's clean and has very nice Crown Rooms.

We have flown US Airways to Rome changing planes in Philadelphia.

With Delta you may get there but you never know where your luggage will end up.

brats, we travel light and only do carry on, so I'm not worried about out luggage.

Hi Iamq, I am FF on Delta and have used them for most of my travel to Italy flying out of SFO. I too strongly prefer to go through Atlanta when possible vs. JFK -- every time I've been delayed (once substantially, had to either stay over or pay for flight on another plane) it has been at JFK. Also, I agree with above poster that Crown Room is better in Atlanta. Finally, I like having the slightly shorter trip for the first leg and the longer (overnight) flight for the second.

Thanks annw and ladylawyer about the feedback on Atlanta. If I choose Delta's routing I will remember this. I also like the longer (overnight) leg too. It gives the ambien a better chance of working. (-:
