Delta/Air France or US Airways

It appears Delta has cancelled their direct flight from JFK to Marco Polo -- at least when I was scheduled to fly in late October. Because of the change I can probably get a refund and book on another airline. US Air has direct flights from Philadelphia. But I have never really liked US Air and their ratings on tripadvisor are lower than Delta. With the direct flight I get in Venice three hours earlier and feel like I am getting an extra (half) day to do some sightseeing. My Delta flight will originate at JFK and go through CDG with an arrival in Venice about noon. I will be traveling business so maybe US Air wouldn't be so bad..

I don't like the stopovers at CDG (coming and going). Would Philadelphia be better to fly out of?

Thoughts? Delta or US Air?

JFK-VCE is a seasonal flight that typically only operates from April to May through some point in September. Why it was in the system beyond that is anyone's guess (perhaps they wre leaving it there to see advanced loads and if they were high they'd operate it longer).

Yes you could.

"US Air has direct flights from Philadelphia."
This flight is the same deal as the Delta flight you just had cancelled. It a seasonal flight. I don't know that I'd book this flight regardless as I think odds are pretty high you'll have a repeat experience from the JFK-VCE Delta flight.

I check One World for mid-October.

From JFK your stop choices are either LHR or MAD. There's a BA flight that goes through London City Airport (LCY) also.

I'd take MAD over LHR any day.

Why not fly from JFK or Atlanta on Delta to either Rome or Milan nonstop and then to Venice?

I am pretty sure that the US Air flight does not run in October, so I'd say that is out.

Otherwise, I don't think connecting through CDG is that bad and wouldn't be too bothered by taking the Delta flight.

If the time didn't work or I thought "if I'm connecting, I might as well look around at other options", then I would probably choose BA. They have the best ground services of any of the options I see. They have flat beds on the overnight portion. They have the best intra-European business class product (not that that is saying much). And T5 is really not a bad place to connect (I think the best "airport" in Europe), horror stories about LHR aside.

Why not fly from JFK or Atlanta on Delta to either Rome or Milan nonstop and then to Venice?

Rome is seasonal only from JFK for Delta and there are no flights from Milan Malpensa to Venice on any Delta partner.

It turns out the US Airways flight DOES run through October and in to November. I was disappointed about not having that extra day in Venice, but it turned out I was really too tired to do anything once I arrived anyway.

Several people in my group did fly in on the USAir flight from Philadelphia. The return trip ended up being delayed by three hours, so I am glad I stuck with Delta.
