Why is Europe to US more expensive than US to Europe.
My dad told me that a airfares for Europeans travelling to the US is much more expensive than for Americans travelling there. At first I didn't believe him (he's been wrong before) but then I did some searching on travelocity and he was right.
I tried several different cities and dates, and the US to europe price was always significantly less than Europe to US.
Does anyone know why that is?

For one thing, the US dollar has plummeted against the euro. Something like 30% over the past few years.
Americans don't have the worldwide purchasing power they used to have. In fact, the US has become a low-cost shopping mecca for many Europeans.

For many years, cost of living has been higher in Europe than in the US - whether the USD was strong or weak. Things are just more expensive there.
And air ticket prices basically is based on "what people will pay", with very little relevance to actual cost of transporting you from here to there.

Travelocity is a US-based website that doesn't specialize in Europe to US tickets. Just use a Europe based website and you'll find fares that are just as cheap. Currently, I can fly Amsterdam - San Francisco return for € 250. (about 325 USD)
