Continental bassinet size on 777-200
 

Hello! We will be flying with our 4 month old daughter on Continental's 777-200 from Houston to London in the spring. I know it's hard to guess, but I was wondering if the "average" 4 month old would fit in this bassinet, it looks really, really small, it's 11 x 7 x 29 (SEE PHOTO, 2nd & 3rd pic DOWN). Right now my daughter is 2 months old 12lbs and 23" and has consistently been in the 75th percentile for height and weight, so she's not a "huge" baby, but I know things can change in 2 more months. It also looks like the bassinet tapers more narrow at one end. I just can't imagine even a tiny baby fitting in there, but they say it holds a baby up to 22 pounds!

Are you flying business class? Are these the same bassinets in coarch ?

The 22lb limit was based on the hanging bassinets on other plane type. This one certainly can hold 22lb or more, but you're right that they do look very small. I think you may have to look for other airline options.

I agree, seems like it would have to be one skinny 22 pound baby to fit in there! Seems like the old hanging bassinets were bigger.

I was wondering about that lid, the whole thing is weird, how does the lid stay up I wonder??? And what's that mesh thing? Does it attach over the baby??? Wish I could find a Continental flight attendant to answer these questions!

Don't know how the lid stay up, but I'm sure it does. Baby underneath the mesh, for safety. On regular bassinets, there should be a piece of fabric that goes over the baby too so he/she won't get thrown into the air if there's turbulence.

BTW, I'll be in a CO 777-200 this Friday, and I'll be in first row of coach. I'll try to play with the bassinet if I have a chance.

Giulia - Before getting off my flight, I took a good look and more pictures of the bassinet in front of 8KL. First, sizewise, it is really as small as it looks in the other pictures. Basically useless except for newborn to a few months old. The mesh is there as designed and I have no problem with it.

The lid has an pretty sophisticated hinge - after I lift the lid and opened it 90-degrees, I can then push the now-vertical lid downward to lock it in place. It will stay open unless someone give it a nice pull upward to unlock it.

Will post some pictures and link to them once I get some more sleep and have time.

Thank you so much!!! Now I know not to rely on the bassinet, but it will be nice that it's there just in case maybe she will fit into it. Glad to know the hinge has a way of staying open. I guess we'll just stay in those seats anyway and roll the dice! I'd love to see your pics! Thanks again, brilliant job!

Those bulkhead seats are really nice for being coach! Sheeeeesh that bassinet is ridiculously tiny, is that a joke? I'm not even sure a newborn would fit comfortably in there. Hmmm...well thank you SO much for posting those pics, that gives me something to think about! Were you able to reserve those bulkhead coach seats or did you have to ask for them when you got to the airport? I wouldn't mind those at all!

Giulia - Those seats are available to gold and platinum elites when booking. Within 24 hours of departure, they are also available to everybody for a charge. Not sure for Trans-Pacific, but it's around $129 each way for Trans-Atlantic.

Those bassinets are clearly an after-thought with those new seat designs. Those seats are the most space-efficient true flat-beds with all forward-facing seating, and are highly praised by most passengers. But apparently, there are still compromises.

When I looked at the bassinets in person, what came to my mind is that they look pretty comfortable for a stuffed animal. The pillow also very soft. :D
