Connection times & weather
 

I am trying to decide what airline to choose for my mid-March trip to Ireland and I was wondering if the weather in March in Chicago or Newark is still questionable at this time of the year? My other choice is Atlanta, I figure I'd be pretty safe with it though. The cheapest flights seem to all go through ORD, I just don't want to be delayed for crappy weather! Thanks!

Sure, the weather can be questionable in ORD or EWR in mid-March. However, I would not (personally) avoid ORD at that time (I try to avoid both ATL and EWR out of principal, regardless of weather ;).) O'Hare is very well equipped to handle all but the most horrific weather conditions, and I wouldn't expect things in March to be all that awful.

We've been through ORD and EWR in March numerous times (including transfers to Europe). We've hit everything from blizzards to balmy. Very unpredictable. I'd base decision on the airline, schedule and fare rather than the airport - just leave sufficient connecting time.

Newark is affected by weather far more than Chicago is. Rain, low clouds, & wind frequently disrupt all NYC area airports 12 months of the year, not just winter. ORD with wider spaced, multiple runways is better able to handle bad weather than EWR.

Chicago is susceptible to more snow, but as stated above is well equipped all but the most horrific weather. Likelihood of a major snow storm is much lower in March vs Jan/Feb.

People think of delays at Chicago airports for winter weather but we are well equipped to clean up, de-ice and keep moving. It's the summer thunderstorms where you can't really do anything that have accounted for some of the most horrible delays over the years here.
