checking backpacks
I want to carry on my internal framepack..it's small..but check it on the way home, can I do this with all of the straps? should I bring a bag for the pack?? Thanks!

I checked my internal frame pack on my way to and from Alaska. I had no problems. Just ask the airline to put it in a big plastic bag. My bag was brand new and it came out unscathed.

thank you...:D

I have checked my backpack (no frame but lots of straps) in the last 6 transatlantic trips I have been on. Never had a problem, don't even need a plastic bag. There was maybe 1 or 2 airports where I was asked to take my backpack to the "special luggage section" (usu for bikes/skis) to drop it off, so that the straps won't get caught in the conveyor belt where the regular check-in desks are. |
My hiker/camper sons and husband have checked backpacks many times, no problem. And they never put it in a bag--but you won't be able to have you sleeping bag or pad attached to the outside.

I found a backpack that has small wheels in case it gets heavy and a large velcro flap that you can fold up over the straps if you need to check it....works pretty well.
