Checked In Baggage when Transit
 

Hi all,

I'm flying overnight from Singapore to Nice and transit in Amsterdam by KLM. I will have a suitcase checked in.

I will arrive at Amsterdam airport at 8am, and my next flight (by KLM too) to Nice is at 1pm. There is, however, earlier KLM flight from Amsterdam also to Nice at 10am. I didn't book that flight because I want a longer layover in Amsterdam.

My question is, will my checked-in baggage be placed in the same plane with me (which is at 1pm)? Or will it go with the first next plane (which is at 10am)?

They may offer to check it all the way through but for that length of connection I'd be happier collecting the luggage at AMS and then rechecking it the next day.

There's less chance of it being lost in some corner of a warehouse - and if it didn't reach AMS more chance of you getting it in time for the flight to NCE.

There are lockers of various sizes at AMS so you don't need to lug the luggage into town.

Most probably the bag will be on your 1 PM flight although sometimes they do use the next filght and the bag will be waiting in Nice.

I disagree with alanRow. No need to reclaim any bags on a 5 hour connection. AMS is pretty good at baggage.

In all likelihood, you and your bag will be on the same flight.

I see no reason to collect and recheck your luggage.

I actually misread it - I thought OP was doing an overnight stop.

Your luggage will be on the same flight as you. They now code the baggage tags to do so (in most cases). Security also wants your luggage on your flight.

True, Lynn, but note that if the airline decides to put it on a different flight they can do so. So long as it's their decision, not the traveller's.

But, in a very few cases where it's sent ahead without me, what should I do later to get my baggage when arriving at Nice?

Go to baggage claim and look around. Sometimes they put early arriving luggage into a pile or in the corner or somewhere nearby. If you see your bag, find an agent and tell them before pulling it just to be safe.

Then locate the airline's baggage office/desk (usually nearby) and look in ... sometimes the bags are in there.

Then, if you wait for your bag and the belt stops without it having come out, go to the office and ask ... sometimes they move early bags into a nearby secure room.

This is stuff that passengers do NOT need to think about. You don't need to know if there's an earlier flight, you don't need to know how your luggage get there. You get off your plane, and you go to the baggage claim of YOUR flight. Let the airlines and their workers worry about those things.
