cheap air to South Africa

Where can I get the best deal on air to Johannesburg for August? Departure from anywhere in the US.
Thanks for the help.

South African (SAA) are the only direct flights and tend to be expensive. Your best bets are with Air Portugal ( via Lisbon )and Iberia ( via Madrid ). Call them and ask if they can direct you to one of their 'consolidators', agents that sell cheap for them.

There are a number of consolidators who offer much better fares than SAA or the coshare Delta. I don't know if it is advertising but hope not - Frosch in Houston and Florida, Corral(?sp) in Florida, Premier in Philadelphia are a few that I know of. The gateways for SAA/Delta are New York and Atlanta - maybe others but I do not know.

Try www.2afrika.com. They do offer tours and/or airfares only. I believe they use Northwest/KLM, so you could fly from just about any city in USA.
Good Luck!

Contact Karell in Coral Gables, FL - consolidators for SAA. We used them, ask for Hugo Molina. They send you through Atlanta - connecting with SAA#210. Prices PP will run $1150-$1200. Make they usre they quote 2003 prices through the fall.

Not to be argumentative, but isn't August the absolute worst time to go to South Africa??? Plus, because it is the peak season for traveling for Americans, I still don't think you will see any discounts on your flights. Unless you have to go in August, you may be better off waiting until at least September, if possible.

But, to do more than just question your choice and actually contribute to your post, I found some great fares on www.orbitz.com using Northwest Air and KLM (connecting in Amsterdam). From LAX-CPT-JNB-LAX it was under $1300 for early May. It was as if I was getting my Cape Town to Johannesburg flight for free.

Let me know if you need any assistance with nice discounted accomodations, as I have researched lodging in Cape Town and safaris extensively. Good luck.
